I was totally boycotting this race series since they moved all the women's fields to 3:15 p.m. starts. I am usually on the couch reading my smutty romance novels at that time on a saturday afternoon. But, a teamie and my hubbie both suggested it would be good late day training for that silly afternoon circuit race at Mariposa. With this in mind, i decided to do the race. I took it one step further by showing up early at the venue and climbing 2K feet prior to the race. There...that should minic how I might feel at Mariposa????
There was a half way decent showing for the womens 35+ category...seven of us old chicks. After I made a face at the ref who suggested ALL the women race together, he put the 35+ with the three women in the 1/2/3 category. I gave him a smiley face! So, the ten of us set off.
The race is only 4 laps, so you cant wait too long. With two to go, a strong 35+ gal from Pen Velo took off up the headwind rollies. Two 1/2/3 gals and myself went with her. The four of us worked together and stayed away with the intent of fighting it out for the wins at the slightly uphill sprint finish.
I found myself on the pen velo gals wheel going into the final right hand turn and just put my head down and sprinted up the slight rise to the finish. Nobody came around, so got the win.
guess my little experiment prior to the race payed off. My legs were not too fried, but I felt like I had done some effort for the day.
