Lea and I showed up to represent Velo Bella at cantua creek road race on Saturday. It was an extremely small field with just lea, former Bella Sherri and I. I really didn't know how I would feel since I lost my oatmeal with cranberries and walnuts going over the pass from King City to Coalinga. I really hate roads that take on the life of a roller coaster. It was cold, but had the promise of turning out nice by the time the race ended. Always a hard call on whether to wear arm warmers, leg warmers, etc. I always end up wimping out and wearing both.
After telling the race official in no uncertain terms we would not like to be combined with the 4's field, our merry group of 3 took off into the head wind taking turns rotating at the front. Very civilized. We chatted and got caught up on cycling gossip. When we got to the turn around, i swear the wind had again changed and we faced a head wind coming back. Damn, I hate head wind in both directions. When we hit the hill for the first time, Lea and I set a nice tempo up the climb to finish the first lap. Sherri dropped off the pace and then there were two.
Lea is an animal. She can pull a consistent hard tempo forever. I was getting my legs ripped off just trying to match her pace when it was my turn at the front. It was turning into a great training race at this point. When we got to the final climb, Lea gave me a nice lead out at the bottom. My legs felt fried at this point and I just wanted to finish the race and eat my scone back at the car. Lea finished seconds behind me and we waited for Sherri to finish and collected our "one of a kind" velo promo t-shirt. A wonderful bella podium and great start to the season.
