Here is Suenago's report from the first day of racing on President's weekend:

Cantua Creek RR 2/18/12:

and I lined up with 4 other 35+ master women at this years Cantua Creek RR. This race is always interesting because of the wind and the finishing hill. I always try to sum up the competition while I am standing at the start line and like always, totally miss who the climbers in the group may be.

My racing game plan this year is to be more aggressive, so after threw down an awesome attack on the first lap (into the head wind), I followed it with a try just before the first turn around on the slight uphill head wind section. I figured if I could get a little gap, I would have the tailwind to help me string it out a bit. When the group caught me, one gal who is pretty new to racing said, “well, that was quite a trick”. Yea, you haven’t seen nothing yet, honey.

set the pace up the first lap climb, keeping everyone together. The second lap put in another timely attack, but otherwise the lap was pretty uneventful. (no other riders trying anything other than sitting in). We all took turns battling the headwind section. On the way back to the finish, we were passed by a men’s field and one of the gals dropped her chain. Simultaneously, the “pinkie” racer decided to drop the hammer. That caused a bit of chaos. Everyone got back on the peloton except the gal who dropped her chain.

The finishing climb sorted out the field with the Kalrya racer and myself sort of battling it out. I was able to stay in front at the finish. was an awesome teammate with her attacks and strong finish on the climb. It was a great start to the 2012 Velo Bella racing season!

Here's Liz's report:

Pine Flat RR
2/19/2012
East of Fresno CA

I really like this race, weather is usually good, course has some good scenery, and in a sick way I love the climbs. Plus it is a good butt kick to get a jump start on the season.

Drove down with Cammy the night before. She heard sirens during the night (I slept blissfully..) driving out saw police tape a half block from the hotel, never did find out what happened.

Didn't warm up a whole lot, skipped the race wheels. Only 4 of us in our master's group, including Bobby who Sue outsprinted the day before at Cantua. A gal from Sacramento rounded out our little field. We had the option of racing with the 4s which I thought would be more fun, less work. Everyone agreed so off we were in a group of about 20.

The hardest climb is the ride out of the boat launch, which is a neutral promenade till the main road. We weren't going that hard but the Sacramento girl got shredded, Cammy and I waited for her, but Bobby said "well she got lapped yesterday so she won't hang in anyway" I told her it is a NEUTRAL PROMENADE and you don't drop anyone. We waited, towed the gal up, but she couldn't hang and was on her own.

One scary incident happened when a truck tried to pass the peloton and nearly ran head on to a minivan, had to move over into the pack, but all was OK, though was a pretty scary moment.

Everyone else stayed together, on the out and back, through the orange groves, on the rollers. Cammy and I both attacked off the front to see if Bobbie would chase (yep) she smart aleckly said "don't you think it is a little too early to try to get rid of me" don't remember what I said but I thought no time like the present.

Cammy and I planned on hitting hard on the hills, and when the first climb came, I hung with the lead group of cat 4s, but there was Bobby. Finally it was down to me and another girl, who was super strong, and she rode away from me. I just kept a hard tempo, wondered where Cammy was, it was foggy and I couldn't see much ahead or behind, I got to the flat section and kept a good tempo, but was caught by a group of 3 or 4 girls including Bobby----damn, wondered if I went too hard and she would get me in the end, finally on the last km she said "good job" I'm not a climber', I didn't trust her and rode my ass off, did finish well ahead of her, found out Cammy had some chain issues, but had made up a lot of ground even after stopping.

Got my very first Velo Promo t shirt of the year! What I do for t shirts.

I was really impressed with the strength and skill of the cat 4 girls, super bunch and really fun to race with them.

Respectfully submitted
Liz
