This is my FAVORITE race of the year..why? It is all women and it is a good course! 2-22-2 - the bike is challenging because of the hills, the run is fun because it is around a lake...the time of the year is beautiful - usually a crisp fall day!
This year did not disappoint!
Let me start out by saying that I knew I wouldn't be a contender for the podium this year because I have been focussing on my running training so much, I have had very little riding training...I hired a coach this year to help me try to Boston Qualify...that was to shave an hour off of my marathon time - doh! Then....I broke my hand at the end of August, so I didn't think I would get to even do this race...I was signed up for another Du the day after I broke my hand, which I was convinced by a friend (albeit 70 text messages later) that she would ride the ride for me and I would do the run for her since her back was killing her and we did it as a relay. I was OK with that since I did not have a cast on my hand at the time, probably the smarter choice in the long run.
So race day comes and I'm going to race the run, glide the ride, and go with how my hand feels and if it lets me shift, etc. I run the first 2 miles faster than ever before and I'm feeling great! 6:52!! I can't believe it! Then I take to transition - 2:00 T1? (I am slow in Transition, so this is fast for me - especially with a cast on my hand!), and I'm onto the bike! Hearing my coach in the back of my head "Keep your Heart Rate down!!! We have a marathon in 2 weeks!!!" I do that...150 is my average, so I have to hold back on the ride. 17.2 mph average (not what I'm capable of...but...) and I finish an hour and 15 later...grrrr....off to run again. Ouch! Cramps above my knees! I guess there is something to be said for "brick" work! Oh well, I work through that and manage to finish the 2nd run with an 8:10 pace. 1:50 overall and that put me at 14th in Age Group, 80th overall. I won't complain since I didn't "race" the whole thing...
My coach was there watching me to make sure I was honest and true to myself an didn't blow up my legs. (Pic below).
All in all, GREAT day for a ride and added on a couple of runs - Proud to be a Bella! Woot!
