Thanks to the hard work of many people, OBRA is establishing a High School Cyclocross Series this fall. Schools can enter teams with a minimum of three riders; kids in outlying areas can combine to make a regional team (i.e., "Corvallis United" includes kids from Corvallis, Lebanon and Silverton).
I would very much like to help out the kids in inner-city Portland Interscholastic League (PIL) schools who might want to do this but have no resources to start. I taught marching band at several of the PIL schools for a total of over twenty years. I am using that connection to see if interest can be nurtured to start an all-PIL team with kids from multiple Portland urban high schools.
The Portland-area coordinator is especially keen to get girls involved. To that end I am scrounging all my channels to come up with smaller atb frames and parts to build up bikes for these kids, and trying to source smaller size jerseys and accessories to help outfit them.
So... just as gear was collected through VB earlier this year for a high school mountain biking team in Salinas, I am now seeking leftover gear for this effort. Jerseys, small parts to build up mountain or cross bikes, winter accessories (ear and arm warmers and the like), ANYthing. The kids in the suburbs have the resources to get started but the urban kids don't; and having taught in the underserved, underfunded PIL for twenty years I have a soft spot for the kids in my 'hood.
If you have anything you can kick in that would be greatly appreciated.
