Has anyone ridden the Sea Otter Road Race? Is the CAT 4 category crazy fast? Do you think that a casual racer that isn't crazy fast such as myself would be better off in the Masters 35+ (I'm 39) or CAT 4 group?
There is a Gran Fondo event which sounds fun but I'd like to race. Last year I raced mtb but can't this year because it is on Sunday and I gotta go home that day .
My experience is that the Masters were faster and it felt alot safer. The RR does not have alot of mileage, but it's hilly and always windy. I highly suggest you pre-ride the course, so you get a good sense of what to expect from "the wall" and "Barf-Boy".
When I raced with the Masters, I was alone most of the time, because those ladies were too fast for me. After that I raced in the Cat 4 and actually got to race with others and stay in a group.
Hope that helps,
P.S. what is the Gran Fondo that you are talking about?
Thanks for the input. I figured the Masters group would be pretty fast. I like the safety factor of riding with more experienced riders but probably would not be able to hang. I'd love to pre-ride the course but not sure if possible since I would be coming up from So-Cal that Thurs and the race is on Fri. My strength is climbing so I am not so worried about the climbs. My weakness would be descending, for sure. I'll think about it.
The Gran Fondo is more of a "fun ride" with some timed sections. Check out the Gran Fondo section on the Sea Otter page for more info. These things are gaining a lot of popularity.
