Curious about Cross?

Velo Bella is accepting new members for the Velo Bella-Ellsworth Cyclocross team. While there are some pro team spots available, our emphasis will be on encouraging newcomers to the sport.

Our team will be holding clinics and training leading up to the cyclocross season. These clinics will be taught by local cyclocross stars and will accommodate all levels of abilities. Our team has no club dues, no minimum race requirements, no frame purchase requirements, no stress. Just have a great time learning a beautifully hard sport.

Team benefits include:

Team clinics and training
Access to cyclocross experts for advice
Team tent and support at NorCal/Nevada Cup and other local races
Discount on custom painted Ellsworth Roots CX bike (but purchase not required)
Discount on other sponsor product (again, not required)
Random silliness and a little bit of mayhem (required)

If interested, please contact me at sabinedukes@hotmail.com (Team members will be accepted at anytime, but those wishing to purchase a custom painted cross frame will need to act soon!)

Pro team inquiries should be sent to Beth Welliver at Bethwellie@mac.com
Pro team inquiries should include race results and expected race schedule.

Will training and clinics be posted here?  If we are already a Velo Bella team member is there anything else we need to do to participate?  Thank you,  I am really looking forward to cross season.  I have been wanting to do a cross race since I was 18!!! : )

This sounds local to your area, which is a bummer for those of us living far away. Will you post tips and suggestions online that arise out of your clinics for the rest of the Bellas please?

Thanks --Beth

Hey Beth,

There are not too many bellas currently in the Portland area that I know of racing cross. Maybe a couple.

Brenna lives here in Bend and is probably going to be playing with some cyclocross.

The group I am working with here for a series promotion is planning on doing a women only clinic for cyclocross skills.. however this is still really early in the works and is still a couple of hours away for you. I will try to keep you in the loop on those.

There are three sets of 'cross clinics in Portland that I'm aware of:

1. Upper Echelon Fitness offers a Thursday night series out at Alpenrose Dairy for women only that is quite good, through end of September. 15 bucks a week is a little rich for my blood to do every single week, but I did attend the first two and found them enormously helpful. Sign up in advance at Upperechelonfitness.com.

2. Sellwood Cycles and the friendly folks who bring you the Cross Crusade are holding a series of Wednesday evening clinics at Alpenrose. The series of three began this week and runs through Sept. 16. Ten bucks a clinic. (I signed up for the series, but didn't feel well tonight and had to skip the first one. Waaaah.)

3. Yakima (the rack company) is sponsoring a wacky series of Monday night clinics at Portland Int'l raceway (where the summer short-track series was held). Ten bucks a clinic, and the evening ends with -- get this! -- after the clinic, an all-comers 'cross race in the DARK, with rows of bicycle headlights marking the course. I believe there are prizes being offered.

All of these clinics begin at 6:30 and run till around 8 pm or so. For the latter two, I'd say arrive between 5:30 and 6 to sign up.

With all this schooling there was just no excuse for me NOT to try 'cross, even if I collapse from exhaustion. Cyclocross is just, well, SO Portland.

Please Please Please tell me you are doing the Kiddie Cross on Halloween.  My daughter Skye has been looking forward to it all year and has committed to ditching her soccer game that day. (Cycling Rules!)  Last year she did two laps of the adult course in full costume!
