Hi Everyone,

http://www.iceman.com

Quick note from the recently defrosted great white north!  Our friends over in Michigan have this little race every November called Iceman, and I have heard epic tales of wonder and amusement for years now about how fun Iceman is for contestants and fans alike.  The race has been going on for almost 20 years, and all 2000 registration slots have been reserved within 48 hours of being available over the last few years.  This is a SPECIAL deal…

Steve Brown and Dave Myers do a phenomenal job of organizing and promoting this event and they have set aside a limited number of slots JUST for Velo Bella members.  Remember, there is no way to get a ticket to this party.  They’ve been sold out for almost 9 months…  I have committed to bring two Pro MTB racers and our complete pro team setup to the race, but they would LOVE to see non-pro athletes come out and race too.  There are age groups for each category of racer, so if you’re a total beginner and want to have fun, come on out because you’ll race against other beginners too.  You can race tandem, solo, fixed, single speed, on a downhill bike, whatever!  Steve has secured almost $10,000 in merchandise prizes and $23,200 in cash!  Don’t miss your chance to come out and enjoy a fantastic weekend of racing before things too silly up here in Polar Bear country.

So here’s the deal.  This race is more of a weekend destination than it is purely an MTB race.  Let’s make a Velo Bella weekend of it.  All you Minnesota Bellas, it is time to meet your MI sisters and show up in strength showing Michigan what Minnesota-ice-in-the-veins does for us.  Bellas from warmer climes ready for a late season challenge get on a plane and we’ll meet you at the airport and get you to and from the race comfortably... I will coordinate travel schedules and race support just as the Pro Teams experience and you’ll get a chance to meet new VBs from around the country and see a part of the country you probably otherwise wouldn’t.  Nothing against Traverse City, but I doubt being the cherry capital of the world draws many wintertime visitors.  Having said that, I have a feeling Steve may know (I know Dave does) a super secret source of Cherry Brandy useful to warm cold bones on a cold day…

Race registration costs $60 and needs to get to me soon.  Once I know who is going to commit to a great weekend of fun and merriment, we’ll coordinate transportation and lodging to make things easy on everyone…  We have a very limited number of slots (HUGELY popular race), so let me know quickly.

Have fun,

Alex

Ok, I have to say that this is one of the MOST FUN events ever and the Dark Horse party is NOT, NOT NOT to be missed!!

I'm thinking about coming up and racing this one SS since oddly enough we're going to be in MI the week after anyway for...yes...the opening day of deer season.  *sigh*

If this is the case, the Grand Traverse Resort has some condos and/or rooms that are reasonable for a group of people.

You have to go to the iceman website. I am not sure that there is any space left, this race fills quickly. You have to realize that this is a 27 mile race, with some pretty hard riding. It can be snowing and icy as well. There are different groups however, beginner, clydes, etc.. Clydes is based on weight, so I am unsure about that. (I think 145 for females and 200 for men) but I am not sure. Beginner is broke down into ages as well! They have smaller races at 8miles as well! The iceman in my opinion is something you don't just jump into. The slush cup is good for the kids. I know a lady here in town that a couple years ago had a shoulder separation and an acl tear and she is a really good rider. Her brake it a tree on the way down! I would wear a full face helmet if I were to do this!

Its fun to just go watch as well!

Just passing on a message from Alex:

The plan is still to go to Iceman. Alex will have more info for all after friday.

I am certainly excited about meeting some of you and racing at Iceman. I am totally new to the Velobellas and I am really looking forward to be more involved.

I have booked a 1-bedroom suite at Tamarack lodge in Traverse City. It fits 4 people, has a full kitchen, living room etc. Since I don't know how many people are going, and I was not even sure I was going, I booked it just in case... :)
They also have 2 and 3-bedroom suites, not sure if still available though. It's a relatively new place so it might not be on people's radar...

Hopefully Alex will have more info for all on friday.

I am happy to help with lodging if I get some info on numbers.

Is the place you've booked full?  If not can I buy a bed from ya?  I'll be driving in and arriving friday.  If everything falls through my parents have a place in Boyne City, but that's kind of a hike.

I just called Tamarack lodge and they have 3 2-bedroom suites available, 1 3-bedroom and 1 1-bedroom.

Allie, you are welcome to stay with me.

Depending on the numbers, the 3-bedroom suite could be fun too.

Hopefully we can finalize this tomorrow.

HI!  Thanks for the update!  I've been waiting for entry confirmation before looking at lodging, so assuming entries all work out, I may need a room too.  We've stayed at condos at Grand Traverse in the past & they are well appointed and super economical.  Just something to consider.  Hope to meet you all at the race!  Monica

I would suggest flying into Traverse City if you can.  Detroit is about 4 hours away, Flint is 3, Saginaw (mbs) is 2.5, etc.

Renting a car is fairly cheap in MI.

So after looking at all of the financial commitment required to get to this race and make it work I have found that the piggy bank just doesn't have it. So I am going to have to, sadly, back out of the race. I am very bummed that I can't go and meat all my MI Bella team mates. I am going to go get some UCI cross points instead.

But hey tell who I can send some cookies to for all the Bellas that can race and I will to get some out to yeah girls.

Good luck and think warm thoughts,

Heidi
