It's been hard getting motivated to go race lately, especially since that involves a long car trip, finding lodging, trying to get to a 9 am start when I live four hours away, but I was determined to make one last big race weekend out of saturday's PA State RR and a downtown crit on sunday.  And it was worth it.

State RR.    The promoter nearly had to cancel due to low registration.  It's the State RR but only 10 or so were signed up by mid week.  To his credit, he went forward with the race, paid out the full prize lists ($1000/13 deep for the W 1/2/3) and cancelled the men's masters races instead.  So the race was ON.  Even more fabulous - the MidA Bellas came out to show our racing legs and flair.  Morgan Styer offered mechanical support and handed up water bottles in the feed zone.  Hilary gave it a go in the Ws race after not being on the bike for a couple of weeks.  And Mel and I represented in the 1/2/3 race.  The course needed a bigger longer hill - or something to make it more selective.  Flat to rolling with one little 200m pitch on the backside.  So we rolled around for 8 laps, a few attacks were tried, all were brought back.  The finish was about 1 km from a right turn with a gradual rise.  Too far to try and launch early since there was  head wind.  We arrived at the 200m sign all bunched up and me with no where to go since I was third wheel and ready to SPRINT but there was no room on the right.  Ah, but there was on the left, so I went around, hugged a wheel briefly, then launched up the left side with clear sailing.  I was about 50m from the line when I realized I had passed everyone but one rider and that, holy cow, I might actually WIN .... but couldn't quite catch Lorraine, who finished first.  Hey, I'm delighted with silver.  I didn't know I still had that much high end speed in my legs.  It was a good day.  After the awards and collecting of $$$ we headed out for pizza and celebration.

The River City Crit was the MABRA (Mid Atlantic Bike Racing Association) age graded crit.  A nice 1 km circuit in Williamsport MD, one of those little towns that is managing to hang on in the world of McMansions, Wall Marts and suburban sprawl.   Started with a block long uphill drag, right turn, another right turn with a downhill, right with a little rise, a left and the last right turn to the uphill drag to the S/F.    Fifteen 30+/40+ women on the line, including Iona Winter from Colavita and some Kenda Tire women.  Fast from the whistle, round and round we went and about 5 laps in - it was a group of 5 off the front - Iona, a cat 2, a really strong cat 3 that has been winning some tough races in the region this year, me and another racer from the Artemis Team.  I was hanging on for dear life, but determined to hang on until I turned into a quivering blubbering mass.   On the two preme laps I got gapped but fought my way back on.   About 5 laps from the end, we sat up and I was able to recover, but that meant a few stragglers behind us caught back on.  By then I was pretty confused as to who was in the break, who had caught back on, and who was a lapped rider sitting on.  Last lap - went as fast as I could, got gapped coming out of the last turn, then sprinted for all I was worth - nearly getting the woman who was 5th, but needed another meter.  Ended up 6th.  Two other riders finished behind me, everyone else was lapped.  Wow.  One of those races where you learn something - that I am capable of staying with a group like that.  And that all those hard January and February intervals where I worked on surges/anaerobic efforts paid off !  Afterwards, Iona and some of the women in the group headed out for some recovery miles.  I had just gotten set up on my trainer - they  invited me to come along but by the time I got off the trainer, got helmet and gloves on etc., they were out of sight.  I ended up finding a quiet little flat road that went along a river for kilometer after kilometer - it would have been nice to have the company, but 30 min on that road sure beat the trainer.

Mid-A Bellas Together At Last!

The Velo Bella's managed to get together for the last road race of the season, the Carlisle PA championship!

The sun was still sleeping as we headed out of town, but by 7am, it was dawning to be a fantastic, and uncharacteristically chilly August day! It felt like a crisp fall morning as we stepped out into the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside.
Nikki and new Bella Zina were the first to arrive, shortly followed by the Styer gang--Hillary, Morgan and little Podium Boy Ethan.

There were 14 Cat 4 racers, 2 of us Bellas. This would be Hillary's first ever road race, only Nikki's second. Zina and Morgan were our support crew, decked out with grass skirt flair! Regardless of how painful the race was going to be, we knew that the Bellas would show everyone how to have fun!

It was a short neutral roll to the start and then we were off. The course was 5 times around a 5.4 mile loop in the Pennsylvania farmland. There were a few very gentle undulating hills, with 3 or 4 very technical 90 degree turns, and one very steep 300m hill on the back side.

The first loop was definitely a warm-up, we were going very very slow. Half way into lap 2 the local PA team made an attack for the hill. Nikki and 3 other gals sped off to catch her, but couldn't keep the pace up the steep hill. So, there were 3 girls off the front, and a middle pack of about 8, and 3 or 4 girls who had fallen off the back end.

The race stayed pretty well broken up through the end. It was a great race, and we had a great time! Hillary finally did her first race and we're all very proud of her! The Cat 1/2/3 race had no breakaways, and ended up being a sprint finish, despite Melanie's hard efforts to get the other girls to work and put some excitment into the ride. In the end, Barb sprinted away with a second place finish, beating out many of the Cat 1/2 girls! GO BELLAS!
