I love this course. Out and back, just under 39 Km, a series of gradual climbs, maybe 2 km long, all big ring, well organized, with modest prize money. This is the 3rd time I've done it and each time I have gone faster: this year I turned in an awesome PR, first for W masters' (age 40+) and just for some chocolate sauce on the ice cream: best time for all women. I started 2nd from last in my age group which meant I had lots of rabbits to catch - and I managed to catch about 4 of them before the turn around and the 5th rider about 8 km from the finish. The only hiccup was at the start when the woman who started just before me must have been in too big a gear since, when the holder let go, she tried to take a pedal stroke and instead veered over to the left, tried to grap the pole for the starter tent and then fell to the ground. A couple of marshalls/officials got her back up and on the bike, just in time for me to hear the starter say "15 seconds." Which was enough to boost the HR a bit as the holder wasn't, um, holding me at that point. We got it together in time for the count down 5-4-3-2-1-GO, only the woman in front had just gotten going again and was still veering over the the left, trying to turn her pedals over. "On your left" I managed to kind of squeak out, before giving her a rather wide berth and took off. There went the 10 seconds that would have brought me home under 1:01 ! I had a good ride, kept it steady and focused, and zoomed across the line - glanced at my watch and couldn't quite believe my time: 1:01:09 - nearly 4 minutes faster than my time on the same course last year. Yippee !!
