Two good races, Pieffer Hill RR and RFK Crit - but I won't be comparing the race to drive ratio. Too scary !!
Left Pittsburgh Friday to stay with friends south of Harrisburg for the night, then the W 3/4 race at Pieffer Hill. 20 women or so on the start line, including 10 from Sturdy Girl. Sheesh ! Course was fun - 6.5 miles, long gradual downhill, R turn with a short stiff bump, a bit more climbing, including a little grade that shouldn't have been as tough as it was, then a R turn to another moderate climb to the S/F. My kind of finish ! On the climby part of the course on lap 2, two women went up the road and by the time I got around all the traffic ahead of me, they were a bit too far up the road for me to catch. I sat up, waited for the bunch, and soon after we started lap #3, we caught one of the riders who had been up the road. I focused on staying about 5th or 6th wheel and even rode on the front for part of the climb so I could carry my own rhythm. One rider had gone off the front on the last bit of the climb, so again there were 2 riders up. Coming out of the last corner I attacked hard, and was closing in on #2, but could not quite make it, one rider came by me at the end, and I ended up 4th. Good enough for $$.
A stop for iced coffee at a local coffee shop I uncovered back in April when I was out east for Ephrata, and for a 6-pack of locally brewed beer from the Stoudt's brewery and I headed south to DC to stay with my brother and his family. That was a LONG annoying drive, 8 frigging lanes of traffic going crazy fast. AArrgghh. I eventually arrived at the Bro's house, with my housewarming present of that 6-pack and some local strawberries I'd gotten on the trip through Maryland. A yummy dinner made by my sister in law, one of those beers, and some strawberries and I was happy again.
Sunday morning was the RFK crit - cool 3Km course next to the stadium, sweeping turns, a couple of broad 180s and dead flat. They offered up a W 40+ race with $500 paid over 5 places -- how could I pass that up ! Decent field with a couple of Kenda Tire women and representatives of two other local teams, plus me and Betty Tyrell. It started a bit placid and I was afraid it would be another tea party then race the last lap, but the Kendas and one of the other teams started attacking, I attacked after one of the primes, and we kept it fairly active until the end. I took the last sweeper a bit wide and had too make up some ground but still got 5th. Nice practice for Nationals !
The drive home was T E D I O U S .... but I be home now !

WV Mountaineer Stage Race
I wanted to get one last race in before Natz and this one seemed to fit the bill: a nice little stage race, not too far a drive, without the intensity of 'Toona. At the last minute, one of the new women racers decided to come along - company for a road trip ! Yippee !!
Friday evening and saturday morning we pack FOUR bikes, a cooler, two duffel bags, a pillow and assorted stuff into the Matrix and head out of the 'burgh. I shoulda taken a picture.
Stage I - 15 mile rolling TT desribed as 'out and back.' No official start times, just roll up to the line when you're ready and off you go. Nice in that I can finish my warm up, change out the warm up wheel to the disc and get going without standing around fretting. I did miss having a rabbit up the road. The TT starts with a long steady grade that lasts about 3 miles. Just as I sense the road leveling off, head down and ready to shift to a harder gear I see a guy with a flag waving me to take a left turn. Huh? Being rather stupid at that point it takes me 15 seconds or so to slow, turn back and head off in the correct direction. It takes a bit to get my focus back. "Out and Back" but with a left turn .... I guess they mean 'out and back on Rte such and such, which takes a left turn 3 miles from the start. ' The turn around is clearly marked, I zip around the cone, head back. The last 3 miles is a sweet downhill - fast enough that I wonder if I am faster pedaling like mad in my 52/13 or coasting .... Cool down, change clothes, eat, check the results. Sweet - I am in first place by 27 seconds.
We drive to the Microtel where we are staying to dump the TT bikes, check in, maybe nap, but end up having about 30 minutes of lag time before we head back to town for the Crit. The Crit is a little over 1 km, one weird kind of corner, mostly an elongated circle. They have weird time bonuses - three 30 second premes, 1:30 for 1st; 1 min for 2nd; 45 seconds for 3rd, 30 seconds for 4th and 5th. Since there are only 5 of us, the race is all about those time bonuses. Betsy Shogren who was sitting 3rd after the TT got one of the premes; Stacy-from-OH gets one, and I get one about 3 laps from the finish. So the GC is unchanged going into the final lap. I tried for the win, but my legs had not completely recovered from their preme effort and I came in 4th. My travel companion snagged 2nd - missing first by an inch or less. Coming around the final bend before one of those premes, I got in front of Lee-Anne to give her a lead out -- I wanted her to try for the preme and maybe soak up the 30 seconds from Betsy or Stacy. Except when I looked back she was eating a goo. I didn't really want to announce to the group - 'hello everyone, just want to let you know that I am leading out Lee-Ann once she finishes her Honey Stinger' - and I wasn't sure she would be set to charge off my wheel while finishing her lunch.
Sunday RR - overnight the GC changed so Betsy is now 1st with that 1:30 time bonus, and I am second place by 9 seconds. Since there are only 5 of us, they put the women in with the 40+ guys which at least offers a few more warm bodies and wheels to draft. The course goes through gorgeous country, chock full of climbing - the same long steady grade from the TT, plus two more similar grades, and a long section of punchy little power climbs. My goal is to stick on Betsy's wheel as long as I can, knowing she has outclimbed me in every race we've done. In my fantasy life, I imagined sticking on her wheel all race long and winning in a sprint. HA HA HA HA HA. Let's just say I live a rich fantasy life. I lasted about 12 miles, then got dropped when those nasty power pitches started. I finished the race solo, having spent a couple of miles feeling sorry for myself before I got down to the task of taking those climbs as hard as I could, thinking of Masters' Natz and the nasty climbs that course will serve up.
I ended up 3rd in the RR and the GC - those 9 seconds just were no cushion at all on the RR course. Oh well. I made my race enty and hotel room back. And had one of the best plates of linguini with white clam sauce at the family-owned-for-40 years-local-Italian Restaurant we discovered just 2 miles from the Microtel. Yyyuuummmm.
I found out later that the organizer managed to get the regional railroad to change the sunday train schedule so that the train went across the course at 2 pm instead of somewhere around 10:30 or so, when we were all out racing. Pretty cool.
