North Middleton police are trying to piece together a bicycle accident Saturday morning that felled a Harrisburg lawyer and well-known competitive racer.
Police say Gary L. Kelley had been riding along Oak Lane at 6 a.m. when a neighbor found him down and injured. Kelley was transported to Hershey Medical Center with a head injury. A hospital spokeswoman said Kelley is listed in serious condition this morning.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led up to Kelley's accident, a police spokesman said this morning.
Kelley is a well-known local bicycle racer who has competed in numerous races with the Carlisle Family YMCA's Yellow Breeches Racing team.
He later joined the South Mountain Velo Club and is listed as the club president.
In May 1998, Kelley was riding his bike along Rockledge Road in South Middleton Township when he was struck by a car. He was flown to Hershey Medical Center with injuries to his arms and back.
Please keep Gary and his family in your prayers.

A good friend of my was the victim of a hit and run last year. Thankfully he escaped with only a severely fractured leg and is now back on the bike. I am always amazed and terribly frightened by many of the motorists out there on the roads. YIKES!! Share the road....yeah right.

Gary is a really super nice guy and Morgan has done alot of group rides with him. He was always waiting up for guys that dropped off the group. Just an overall good guy. Here is some new information on how he is doing.
Please continue to pray for him and his family.
Thanks!
An update on Gary Kelley from Mary Fetrow:
I visited Gary at Hershey this morning. He is a mess. Half his skull is cut
out to relieve brain swelling and he has a broken collarbone and pelvis. His
wife said he is done riding a bike ever…but time will tell if Gary feels the
same. He did not recognize me and was pretty incoherent. Such a shame.
Sharron, his wife, said he will likely be in the hospital for a month and in rehab for
up to 6 months.

Gary's condition has been upgraded from serious to fair...and that the police are still
trying to figure out what happened.
It is really sad when something like this happens to any fellow biker, but especially when you know them.
