Pedaling for a purpose in the Race to defeat cancer!
That's the BriarRose Grand Peloton slogan - a (swim) buddy Lee McCoy is riding in this special event (part of the Tour de Georgia's fund raising activities) and is soliciting donations. As a starving student, I couldn't donate much so I offered to pass the info along. It's a pretty interesting deal: a select group of cyclists (fund raising folks like Lee) get to ride part of Stage 6 ahead of the pros with a celebrity ride leader and a police escort (see press release URL below). And all they have to do is raise some money for the Georgia Cancer Coalition, the charitable beneficiary for the Tour de Georgia.
If you're interested, I can e-mail a scan of a descriptive brochure and a local newspaper article (too big to attach). And I've included a couple websites below. Lee said that 92% of the money raised by the Grand Peloton went to the Georgia Cancer Coalition (which I thought was pretty good). I tried (but failed) to determine how much of the money that the Georgia Cancer Coalition receives actually goes to cancer research or education.
It might be a cool team thing to do next year - but for now, I'm just asking for donations on Lee's behalf. If you would like to donate, I can e-mail the brochure and/or facilitate getting your donation to Lee.
