The Monterey Off-Road Cycling Association (MORCA) has sounded the alarm that the Ft. Ord Re-use Authority (FORA) wants to close down all access trails to Ft. Ord's west side this fall. The closures could last up to 7 years while some areas are cleared of unexploded munitions. I'm not sure why they are closing existing trails in areas that have been deemed safe, but this could mean that bikers would have to drive all the way out to Salinas to ride the only legal trails in the area.
The west side is the best place for beginning riders to learn, and the closest legal singletrack for most of us. MORCA wants to negotiate with FORA to keep at least some of the access trails open to the BLM land. Please join the MORCA e-mail list so that they can count you among those who want access trails to remain open.
FORA will be holding an evening meeting at CSUMB to discuss the closures on Thursday, September 27th. It will be from 5:30p-7:30 PM in the University Center, Room 115/116. The center is located at B St. and 6th St. Please check the MORCA website to verify this information, and to get updates on the situation.
