Our Cyclops Fluid trainer is leaking really badly, and I understand that this is a chronic problem with this make/model. Of course, Cyclops is replacing the trainer (lifetime warranty).
However, I now want to buy a second trainer (to have as a back-up, or for when a friend comes over to spin). I'm not especially eager to buy another Cyclops Fluid. I've also heard that all Fluids eventually leak. I have no experience with Mag trainers, but I have been told they are much louder than Fluid. Can anyone reccommend an indoor trainer? or share personal experience of Mag vs. Fluid?
All opinions welcome. I'll be spinning about an hour at least 5 times a week until winter ends. (Rollers are not an option for me yet.)

| I have a Blackburn Mag trainer that I really like - got it slightly used off Ebay for $129. It doesn't seem that loud to me, but I went from a wind trainer to the mag one. The mag trainer is quieter than the rollers we have.

I have never heard that about fluid trainers leaking. I've had mine for ages (also a Cyclops) and it hasn't leaked. Of course, I hardly ever use mine!
Mag trainers are crazy loud. If you like to watch TV or listen to the rasio while riding, I wouldn't recommend it.

| Yeah, I usually watch CSI or Law & Order, and sprint during commercials so that I don't get too bored. I was hoping some of our northern, cold-weather & limited-daylight sisters would have some trainer recommendations...

| I've never had trouble watching TV over the noise of my Blackburn Mag trainer. Maybe because I have everything setup in an outbuilding and I don't care how loud the TV is turned up?

As I'm staring out the window at the 5 feet of snow on my deck, I think I qualify as a cold-weather sister. And I have the Kinetic Road Machine and LOVE it. It's my first trainer so I don't have anything to compare it to, but it folds up and is fairly quiet, enough so that I can watch America's Next Top Model or Project Runway marathons without having the TV very loud.

Oh, I love watching ANTM!
I've heard others also say good things about Kurt Kinetic -- thanks for your feedback.

I love my Elite. It has a cool elastomer that your tire sits on, so your weight is on your bike on the trainer naturally...that said, we just picked up a Blackburn mag which is really stable and pretty quiet - a great value for the price. I also have a tacx with watts- great for testing and specific intervals, but expensive and a hassle if you want to take it to races, because of the power cord, cadence cord, and control module cord...

| I've currently have a cyclops fluid and wore the screws loose on my cyclops mag trainer (but they fixed it to make it like new). the mag is louder and not as nice/smooth of a ride compared to the fluid. In addition to trainer partys, I guess it depends on if you plan to take the trainer to races and what kind of racing you do... I've been drooling over the elite trainers because their rubber roller thing doesn't chew tires like metal roller things and have heard good things about them. rim resistance might be nice if you're into mtn/cross where as something lighter and more travel savy might be good if plan to travel (by car/air/etc) to races... we have a traveltrac (performance brand) that has done nicely traveling-wise (I can fit it in a suitcase!)
