I'm back in San Diego after 3 years in Israel...here to study my master's (wish me luck; it's hard!!)and take part in life in San Diego again...
I'm 42, from Canada but have lived off and on in Israel, Canada and the US since the age of 18. Last time in California, I was in the SF bay area as well as North County coastal San Diego.
In Canada, I was mostly focused on golf and gymnastics. Lacking those pretty much in Israel, I stuck to riding. We rode hills around the Jerusalem mountains area and we did mounts up by the Syrian border (northern Israel).
To keep in shape, we had flat rides on a few cute 35K and 45K routes on weekends along the scariest and busiest roads in the center of the country. We rode over all kinds of road debris, nails, oil, you name it! - and watched crazy drivers speed past us with their right wheels practically touching the 'shoulders' of the road we used as our 'bike lane'.
I never earned enough or rode enough over there to warrant spending 300 dollars on myself for shoes and cleats (that's the cost over there) and I'm still riding my surprisingly heavy GIANT OCX that I bought used in Carlsbad 7 years ago...so until I start to get more active, I'll stick with it. Carrying it on my shoulder to cross bad roads and climb cliffs is really good exercise!!
I love being here and was happy to find Velo Bella so soon. I look forward to meeting you all and making new and interesting friends!!
thanks for your message! I'll actually be up in Fresno on the 27th and 28th of February for a sports psychology symposium, held by CSU Fresno. Not realizing it was a 5 hour drive from here, i signed up and didn't take the hotel option b/c I figured I'd just drive up and back both days!! LOL.....guess I'll have to shift my plans a little; but i still want to attend this thing...
Perhaps we can get to meet and ride!
