Hi!

I'm a new VB from San Luis Obispo, CA. I mainly ride road and am looking forward to racing women's 4's in the spring. I just got my first mountain bike so i'm enjoying that as well. I look forward to meeting some of you out at the races and also at the team camp if it ends up here again.

Hi Emily:

I live in Fresno, but have a friend in SLO that I'll be visiting. What are some good road routes for me to ride while I'm in town? I used to live in SLO, but wasn't cycling then, so I don't know of any good places to ride.

You pretty much can't go wrong in any direction. How long and how hard do you want to ride and maybe I can suggest something better suited to you.

I will need to ride for 2-2.5 hours while I'm in SLO. Flat land, or not-too-steep hills. I'd like to stay off Tank Farm Road...that road seems too dangerous for road cyclists!

From San Luis you could head out Orcutt Road (sections without a shoulder but generally not a ton of traffic), then left onto Lopez Drive and out toward Lopez lake. There is a little climb going up the dam but it's not bad, the rest is just rollers. Just before you enter the park there is a road to the left Hi Mountain Road, that goes out another 6 miles before the pavement ends.

Another option is taking Highway 1 north up the coast. Not the most scenic since you're on the Highway but it's mostly flat and it has a large shoulder.

You could also head out Higuera out of town where it eventually crosses under the 101 freeway. There is a frontage road off to the right (Ontario Rd). You can take this out to Avila Drive, if you go right on Avila Drive you'll head out to the beach and the pier (only about 12 miles from SLO so you're ride might not be long enough) if you go left you'll have another right turn onto a frontage road that goes through Shell Beach and Pismo. You could turn left on Hind street that will turn into Price Canyon Road (there are a few sections with no bike lane or shoulder). At the light you can make a left and take 227 back into town.

Let me know if you need more info or maps or something.
