Hello!  Jamie here, your SouthEastern VB Welcome Wagon hostess!

I have been so busy this year recovering, training, and racing that I have let all but the bare minimum VB administrative duties get pushed aside. My apologies to all our new members who have not yet received a proper welcome. Here goes my attempt to make-up for me being such slacker...

We have 8 new members in the Clemson, SC area, all joined in February 2008 (yes, I went on a bit of a recruiting spree). As you can tell by the race reports I've been sending out, we are busy here in our little corner of Upstate South Carolina!

Kristen Weinacker: She was already a very strong recreational road rider. It's taken me two years to get her to join up and start racing. She had to complete her Nursing degree at Clemson University, and then get an RN job before she could start racing. So she did that last year, and now she is kickin' some Cat 4 road butt in South Carolina. Kristen is an awesome athlete. Prior to riding, she rowed for Clemson, and did shotput in high school. She loves kitties (she has 5!), cooking, and eating.

Emily Wood: Emily is another awesome athlete. She was a competitive runner for many years. Now that she has raised her family, she is ready to get back into competition, but this time on a bike. She is super-strong on the road, but prefers to race off-road. Sunday, 20 April, will be Emily's first mountain bike race in the VB jersey (Tiger Rag in Clemson, SC).

Kim Turpin: Kim lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, and has been riding in those hills for many, many years. She climbs like billygoat! She is also a confident bike handler, and such a positive energy force! Kristen W. and I have known her for years, and have been ecouraging her to try racing. Now that her daughter is turning 16, Kim can finally spend a little more time on herself and take her cycling up to the next level -- competition! Kim's first race was last month. She lasted about 5 miles and then she had to abandon because a cable broke. But the bike is fixed, and now she's ready to get back out there in some road races.

Heather Borick: Heather is a triathlete and a super photographer. (I'll post some pictures she took of us when I have a chance.) She teaches at Clemson University, and has a daughter who will soon graduate from high school. Heather is another one of those postive thinkers, always upbeat. She is currently training for Ironman Florida (1 Nov 2008).

Kristen McInnis: Not to be confused with Kristen W., this Kristen is also a triathlete, and is training for Ironman Florida with Heather. These two ladies have been turning heads as they do their LSD rides in the VB jersey -- the guys really sit up and take notice!

Patty Malmgren: Rounding out our three-some of triathletes is Patty. She is a school teacher, and mom to three all-grown-up kids. Her son is a nationally competitive triathlete -- how cool is that? Like Mom, like son.

Becky Harley: Our Becky rides both road and mountain bikes. Becky is the one I see out training alone at 7 AM on cold foggy mornings when I am driving to work. Becky is the one who goes mountain biking alone, and doesn't mind when she crashes and no one is there to help her. She is one tough chick! We haven't succeeded in convincing her to race yet -- she says she just wants to be in our club. But she's got the guts for racing! She's braver than many gals I know!

Shelly Geer: What can I say? She's another awesome athlete. I am surrounded by so many fabulous and inspiring women. Shelly is a former competitive runner and triathlete. She's a road rider, a mom, and she also works with the Clemson University Tennis team. Funny thing -- I actually met Shelly about 8 years ago at a rubber stamping workshop that I was teaching. Yes, I am talking about rubber stamps and ink and paper to make crafts and greeting cards with. See? Athletic women can also have a crafty side!

Keep checking the Race Reports area of the forum for updates on what the South Carolina racer-chicks will be doing!
