For how racing happened to me please read on.....
It wasn't that long ago that I sat in my office at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, UT plugging away at Human Resources work only to look up and see signed posters, "baseball" cards, postcards, etc of the Luna team, the Trek/VW Team, the Subaru team, the Haro team, DH ers, etc. on my office wall. At that stage I had no passion to do what I am doing now in the way of cycling professionally but I thought it would be cool if you could do it. But, I never told myself that is what I want and that was what I was going to do. How things change right?
It must have been seeing all the teams and riders come through Deer Valley Resort for the NMBS races every year that got me to do that first MTB race in June of 2000. I raced in the Beginner class which I most definitely was, having NEVER raced before in my life. I won that race, found out that there was a local series along with a national series (NORBA), World Cups and even the Olympics and was insta-hooked on the sport. I immediately wanted to know how to become a Sport racer. Once in Sport I wanted to know how to get to Expert. And once in Expert....well....shall I say that it was the starting times of 7:45am that killed me and gave me the push to apply for a Pro license. Yes, that was my incentive.....better start times. You gotta love it.
The people, the places, the things you get get to see, the new experiences and the new friendships are all just SOME of the reasons I love racing and continue to love racing.
Now back to those people on my office wall. Back then I didn't even know those people on my wall or really even know their names for that matter and now they are my competitors, acquaintances, my coach!, teammates and even my friends. Wow. Who ever would have thunk? I mean really??
Be careful, this can happen to you too.

Hello from Park City - we should go out for a ride sometime. (Not this fall, I'm not risking re-injuring my shoulder, but in the spring perhaps?)
Cheers!
PS - Your story has a familiar ring to it - my first race in beginner Downhill, on a 4" XC bike, in 2005, sport the rest of the year, Expert the next year, then "what the hell, it's the same course, I can be on the podium in Expert or come in last in Pro..."

Thanks for getting the correct blog link in there for us. Sometimes those backslashes ("/") make all the difference don't they?!! I changed it in my original post as well. Thanks for the heads up!

That is great - keep up the good work! Thanks for dropping me a line too. I am always up for improving my DH skills any day. Maybe summer of 08 we can hit the Deer Valley lifts and I can learn a few new tricks from you!
