I have had a bit of a hiatus from racing on my bike the past couple of years…why? I had surgery on my shoulder in 2010 which was a full year to recover from…so that puts us at Late Summer 2011 before I could do any racing…and by then, I had taken up marathon training so intensely, I didn’t have time to start my bike up. That all changed this summer…sort of.
I’m still marathon training, but I have had a couple of friends say to me “I want to do a tri, will you do one with me??” So, I signed up for one in May, but the race wasn’t until September. Another friend asked me to do her first tri with her, but she wanted to do the run part, not the bike or swim – would I be willing? Sure, I’d be willing…but another friend wanted to try cycling, so I was set to the lake to do the swim for our Relay Team. Upon doing that Relay, one of the team members asked “Will you do a sprint tri with me in 2 weeks?” Hmmm…that weekend, I was to run 18 miles for my marathon training…so I delayed my registration until the week before and decided to do it! What the heck, why not?
I had SO much fun! I am saddened that I had forgotten how much fun it is to do all 3 events!
As it turns out, I kept 19.5 mph average on the bike and that sent me into podium contention! I managed to finish 3rd in my age group, and 8th out of 124 females!
As we were riding our bikes back to my friends house after the race, her step dad asked me “Will you do Lake Marion with me in 2 weeks?” I grinned and said “I’ll tell my coach to adjust my marathon training schedule for that!”
So, I’m signed up for another sprint tri in a week and cannot wait! Absolutely loved the VB Kit I was able to dust off - see attached. (Thanks Whitney D for pulling that order together!!!) I get to do another sprint between my 2 fall marathons and I can’t wait!
I’m going to start planning my race schedule for 2013…I’m glad to be back!
