Something has been missing in racing. In the beginning of the year I didn't realize the value of teammates until I noticed most of my competition was winning races and upgrading. They were all on big Cat 4 Women's teams, but I thought they were just strong riders, or trained a lot with other gals... I knew I was strong, but was unable to place on the podium.
Last week I raced with Andrea at Layfette Crit and we only met up on the starting line. Andrea asked what my goal was and I said -to place 1,2,or 3. It didn't happen for me and we didn't really have strategy. Andrea placed 2nd (awesome) and she emailed me later that week. This really meant so much to me... I love getting emails from my teamies! We agreed we would both be in Albany the following Sunday.
Andrea and I met up early before the crit, warmed up (not really-it was 57 degrees and misty), and talked up a game plan. I was a little nervous and not sure our plan could really be executed. The race started fast with constant attacks from Dolce Vita and I fell off the back of the pack after 4 laps and I could see Andrea holding 2nd-5th position..she is so good at that! I fought hard and finally got back in the pack after 4 laps of head games with myself.
There was an uphill arm on the course and Andrea had told me she was going to start sprinting 2/3 the way up on the last lap. She told me to just "grab my wheel" . "yeah...sure", I thought"....sounds easy enough"
When the time came, I was at the back of the pack and my husband was yelling "stand up and get up there!" (We've been doing a lot of hill sprint training...him doing a lot of 'encouraging') I stood up and hammered the hill and Andrea stood up right before I got to her and I grabbed her wheel...We were going so hard and I could see no one was on my wheel...
WE DID IT!!!! The plan worked... After crossing the finish I looked around and I was first in the 4's WOW what a feeling! Andrea was 3rd in the 35's...(2 upgrade points..yeah)
SO MUCH FUN!!! Thanks Andrea! This racing stuff is fun with teammates and plans!!
