Race Report
Record Challenge Time Trial
Moriarty, NM
I spent my Labor Day weekend driving to New Mexico, doing calculations, fiddling with my TT bike, studying the course, and resting to make an attempt to break the existing record of 59:01 women's 50-54 40 km record.
Race Day:
I had a good warmup...parked my trainer near the start and timing clock, jumped off the trainer to my awaiting TT bike as to arrive at the start with just about a minute to spare. Legs felt good, and I wasn't gassed from the altitude (6000 ft).
I lent my velo bella jacket to Leslie, a local gal who had on a sleeveless top, and the officials made her put on a top with sleeves minutes before her start. So she was a bella for the day!
Had a good start, though maybe a fraction of a second too late, I got up to speed, and watched my average speed, HR, current speed. I knew what average speed I needed to keep to make the time checks. Plus I set my timer for every 14 min to make sure I was at the checkpoints on time.
Made a good, but not astounding turnaround. Kept a good pace, and was above my target average speed.
Emptied the tank, rolled across the finish line with a face full of snool. By my calculations, and Wayne's, I did just under 59 minutes...maybe 58:58??
My official time was 59:03. I went to the officials and had them recheck the timing, but it stood, 2 seconds off the record time. It was however my absolute best 40K time, best in age division (I'm the NM state time trial champ..) 2nd best Women's time of the day. BUT I WANTED THE RECORD!!!!
I raced the following day but was pretty wasted and did a 1:01 something. My start and turnaround were better, just the rest of the ride wasn't so hot.
Oh well, there is always next year.
