I spent a lot of time on a bike seat in my life time! I was wondering if anyone else had any run in's with cysts forming from sitting?? I know that kind of seems gross, but my dr informed me it was from biking! They are just fatty cysts that form and as long as they don't bother me I can leave them there! Any idea's to help, maybe a different seat or something?

yeah, I get those too.  I've gotten them throughout my cycling career with every saddle or pair of shorts I've owned.  I just ignore them and eventually they go away.  I asked my doc about them once and he said the only thing he could do would be to lance them.  The recovery from that would be far longer than just letting them go away on their own.

Count me in with this issue. They do seem to go away eventually for me and the only shorts I have found that seem to have reduced their frequency are the sugoi shorts with the green chamois. My Dr said the same thing about the recovery with lancing them.

Cysts aren't even close to being gross.  I have something more similar to boils.  They form in the crease at the top of my inner thigh right where your underwear elastic rubs.   They swell up to the size of a grape.  When they get swelled up, they are extremely painful & sensitive to pressure (i.e. the underwear elastic is mega-uncomforatble as is sitting on a bike).  Then they rupture and expel pus and blood,  See?  I told you it was gross!

I had a male ex-pro cyclist tell me he got the same thing, as do many cyclists (male & female).  His team doctor used to lance them for him.  He said certain people are simply prone to this sort of condition.  His best advice to me was (1) to use anti-bacterial soap to wash before and as-soon-as-possible after riding, (2) to make sure your riding shorts fit snugly (tight compression is best), and (3) to never wear underwear under your riding shorts (a typical new-rider mistake).  Also, get your sweaty shorts off ASAP.  The concept is to minimize friction, which causes microscopic cracks in the skin, and to minimize the amount of bacteria present.

I also found that a firm saddle with no gel is better because then your weight sits properly on your sitz bones, and there is less contact and friction with your skin.  Gel saddles "give" or compress too much, making for more surface-area rubbing while cycling.  (This posting has nothing to do with the female genitalia, so whether or not the saddle has a cut-out is immaterial.  This posting is referring to the two strips of skin which run along your "bikini line" between your thighs.)

I found documentation of this condition on the internet.  It has a clinical name and everything.  I will try to find the link and post it, because I think that this is a subject many people are too embarrassed to talk about.  Bottom-line, you can't prevent it 100%, but you can minimize the effects.

Not exactly saddle sores.  I have gotten them all my adult life, before I was a cyclist, from running and hiking -- any sweaty athletic endeavor using your legs!

Here it is:  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hidradenitis-suppurativa/DS00818/DSECTION=1

"Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin inflammation marked by the presence of blackheads and one or more red, tender bumps (lesions). The lesions often enlarge, break open and drain pus. Scarring may result after several occurrences.

The cause of hidradenitis suppurativa isn't known. But it's considered a severe form of acne (acne inversa) because it occurs deep in the skin around oil (sebaceous) glands and hair follicles. The parts of the body affected — the groin and armpits, for example — are also the main locations of apocrine sweat glands.

Hidradenitis suppurativa tends to start after puberty, persist for years and worsen over time. There is no cure for hidradenitis suppurativa. But early diagnosis and treatment can help manage the symptoms and prevent new lesions from developing."

(Luckily, I do not get them in my armpits.  Interestingly, I also have always had alot of body hair, an oily scalp & hair, and oily facial skin, but no pimples or acne even when I was a kid.  That's my Italian heritage!)

Glad someone posted on this as I'm also am prone to "butt zits".  I've found switching chamoi brands every ride helps too.  Since I bike to/from work, I always make sure that I have two different brand/style/chamoi line shorts. Same goes if I'm just riding consequtive days.  Vasoline also seems to help on longer rides.  Chamoi creams just don't seem to provide the same protection compared to vasoline for me.

Our butts need air! And don't wear underware!  Go to BoxMart-- buy and always wear white, cotton, men's boxers. Wear skirts, loose pants, loose shorts that let lots of air circulate down there.

Ditto on the hygene.  And if need be, dry your self with a hair dryer.

Comfort is King! Er, Queen!

She actually called mine a lipoma (fatty cysts). I actually have a couple on my back as well! She said (the dr) they are prone when you sit on bike seats alot! I have no clue about the ones on my back! If I wear tight underwear tho, it hurts! Hell I would never wear underwear riding, thats pure WRONG! I have thought about trying lose shorts tho!

So Alex Fabbro and I did a heap of 24 hour races last year and we were told to use dipper rash cream. This cam from a friend of ours who has worked as a wrench and team manager fro several pro womens cycling teams over the years as well as ours this year at sea otter. A&D ointment is the best we have used so far. But if you have light coloured shorts in the chamois area it will stain because it is oil based, so stick with dark shorts in the chamois area.

I hope this helps. I have gotten some gnarly saddle sores from far too lose shorts from my old sponsor/team and have dealt with "butt zits" as well and the A&D ointment has been a life saver. Better then any chamois cream I have ever used.

Good luck with this girls and I am so glad that I am on a team that I can share stuff like this with.
